The sudden pause and shift in her demeanor causes a bubble of panic to swell in Klaus' chest. He does as instructed though, sliding down to lay with his back to the door, doing his best to look as asleep as possible. He doesn't speak, barely breathes, as he waits for whatever she just heard to come to pass. Please don't make her leave. Please don't make her leave. Runs through his mind over and over. Even if Mom or Pogo catches them, he really, really hopes they let it slide because he really doesn't want to be alone tonight.

She settled as well, just leaning against the wall, hand on his shoulder, letting her own breathing slow. Careful not to move otherwise, fingers tapping lightly against his shoulder, counting off seconds, after two minutes she gave a squeeze and a barely-there: "Almost."

After another minute and a half she nodded, "Okay, think we're in the clear. Probably just house-noises."

He tries not to let her finger taps fuel the anxious squirming going on in his chest, but it's hard not to. Of all the nights in the world this was not one he needed ruined by being caught out of bed-- or, well, not sleeping, at least. He sighs in relief at her confirmation. "Thank god."

"And Saint Thaddeus." She agreed, smile tilting, as she invoked the patron saint of lost causes, as she occasionally did.

Truthfully she hadn't meant for the tapping to be anxiety-inducing, she'd meant it to be calming on top of letting her track the time elapsed, and it was always possible that what she'd heard was a person who was just being more patient than she gave them credit for, but she doubted it, there wasn't the weight of another person outside.

She was just a little more quiet when she resumed reading, leaning more comfortably against his side, where she was likely to stay unless he pushed her off.
